A few days before Christmas in 2001, I got Reese from Jenny
Guingrich in Portland, IN. I had been wishing for a small, red female
for the longest time and Jenny had two red merle females left. Reese
was the smallest pup from her litter and I knew from the second that I
first saw her that she was the pup for me.
Even though I got Reese for myself, she was definitely Mark's dog.
We began dating shortly after I got Reese, so she thougt she
belonged to him. Reese didn't care for working stock too much, as
she preferred to sniff around the arena and eat poop instead of
chase things! Her favorite activities included riding in equipment with
Mark (trucks, tractors, combines, you name it!) and keeping the other
dogs in line at all times.
While Reese had her faults, she could be a very sweet dog to those
she knew and trusted. She always had rotten breath <G>, but the
top of her head always smelled like fresh cut straw. Pure heaven. I
just can't believe she's gone. We'll miss you sweetie!

On August 11, 1999 I drove 4 hours across Washington state to
adopt a dog that I had never even seen a picture of. For months I
had been working with Second Time Around Aussie Rescue (STAAR)
to find the right dog. After numerous emails and phone calls, STAAR
rep Vic Quirk decided that I would be a great match for one of her
foster dogs.
Zap had been tied outside for the first year of his life and wasn't well
socialized. In the spring of 1999 he was turned into a Spokane, WA
shelter by his owner because he was barking, digging, and was trying
to escape. (Can you blame the poor guy??) Vic found Zap in the
shelter very dirty and unkept. Vic took him home to foster, and she,
her husband, Lee, and their dogs helped Zap to become accustomed
to life as a family dog. As time passed, Zap blossomed into a
wonderful companion and Vic fell very hard for him.
When I drove to Spokane to adopt Zap, (who I would rename
Jackson), it was very hard for Vic to give him up, but every day I
thank God that she did. He has been a true blessing and has filled
my life with joy. We learned how to work stock together as a team.

Jackson and I started our training in September, 1999, at Ewe-topia
Herd Dog Training in Roy, WA.
Our wonderful trainers, Joe Kapelos and Linda Leeman, were
absolutely priceless! Jackson and I learned so much from them and I
am certain we wouldn't be where we are if it weren't for those two!
Jackson successfully finished his STDs title on July 1, 2000 at the
ASC of Washington Summer Spectacular Trial in Graham, WA.
Jackson was my first Aussie and my first herding dog. He was literally
my life changing dog. I would not be where I am today if it weren't for
Jack. He taught me so many things and gave me so many gifts. I
feel so grateful to have spent so many great years with such a
wonderful dog. As hard as it was to come to grips with his aging, I
knew that the one last gift that I could give him was relief from his
pain. Now that he is gone, I do not feel like something is missing. I
feel like things are whole, and that my big ol' bubba is finally at peace
and is watching over me.
